Saturday 18th December 2010
Men’s & Women’s Shootout Finals
The finals were held on an overcast but muggy day. There was a field of 10 men and 10 women who started. The men’s final came down to a chip off on the final hole to decide the winner, with Shinji Manabe prevailing over John Neill. The women’s final came down to the final hole with Margaret McKay and Chris May, with Chris May taking out the title of “Shootout Queen”.
Saturday 11th December
Closing Day
Closing Day at Shandon was marked with the presentation of awards to Shandon members and officials. These included the , the Bill Massey Trophy to Chris May in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Interclub, the Vi Bishop Trophy to Hugh Boyle and the Tom Caithness Memorial Trophy to Brian Hill in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Shandon Golf Club. Brian recently stood down from the President role after 11 years.
Sunday 21st November
Champion of Champions
The weather played a big part in the event which was reduced from 36 to 18 holes due to the rain that fell overnight and early morning. The later start was greeted positively by all who had time to watch the All Blacks demolish Ireland. A field of 25 clubs participated and it was the Shandon team of Richard Pegg, Bobby Ng and Bruce Anderson who won with a gross stableford of 82. Runners up were Miramar on 76.
A special presentation was made to Richard Pegg who won the Wellington Golf Order of Merit for 2010. It was a good weekend all round for Richard who aced the 7th on Saturday on the way to a gross 64.
Sunday 14th November
Committee Stakes, Granddad Trophy and Crundwell Cup
A very competitive number of committee, board and co-opted members went round in the Stakes and Trophy event. The winner of both the Committee Stakes and Granddad trophy with 41 points was Ross Blick. Runner up in the Stakes was Carol Henderson on 40 points. The Crundwell Trophy was won by Pat Corbett and Kim Allan with a combined stableford of 72. Runners-up were Meike and Dave Devos on 69 points.
Saturday 13th November
Multi-National Day – Korean Cup
A near-capacity field was assembled for this annual event. The format this year was a novelty team stableford and the winners were Min Ho Chung, Jong-Hee Ju, Chris Balloch, Shinji Manabe. Thanks to all those who played and provided a gold coin entry. This was donated to junior coaching.
Wednesday 10th November
Mid Week Women’s Open sponsored by Life Pharmacy
The Mid Week Women’s Life Pharmacy Open was held on a beautiful sunny Petone Wednesday morning. A field of 64 ladies took part and the scoring was as hot as the weather. The winner of Division one with a gross score of 82 was Lise Williams. The Division 2 winner Linda Li with a gross score of 90. Thanks to Life Pharmacy who provided a fantastic array of prizes for the tournament.

Sharp Shandon Open Mixed Foursomes
We had a great day for the foursomes. The weather was overcast but improved during the afternoon with a field of 43 couples. Winner of the Best Gross was Richard Pegg and Kellie Harrall and Best Nett Tom Nicolle and Barbara Burnett. The winner of the Sharp TV was a very excited Vonnie Faiumu.
Saturday 30th October
Shandon Ambrose
The annual ambrose tournament, run by the interclub teams for all members, saw a great turn out of players and members and an enjoyable day had by all.
Mobile drinks, mobile food and, a slightly dubious, mobile scoreboard guy ensured everyone was satisfied and informed on both the golf and refreshment fronts.
Some good scoring in trying conditions had the Tavita Mene-lead team coming home in first place by a narrow margin. In fact Tavita’s team had three eagles including a 2 on the 2nd when the captain himself holed a 7 iron, much to the delight of all his players.

This was followed by a wrap up of the interclub performance for 2010, the notable results being Judy Simpson’s Bronze pennants team runner up, Alan Binns 18 hole div 2 team runner up and Bruce Anderson’s 18 hole div 9 team winners.

Sunday 24th October
Shandon Summer Scramble
The Shandon Scramble was played on the Sunday of Labour weekend with a near-capacity field of 33 teams. The format for the day saw teams of three playing ambrose competition along the same lines as the popular Holden Scramble that was run by the NZ PGA until recently. With a wonderful weekend of golf at Cape Kidnappers up as the top prize, the competition was understandably fierce.
It was the Shandon team of James Donnelly, Lance Pupuke and Daryll Turley that came out on top with a score of 56.84, just .56 ahead of a Wainuiomata combination. The success of the tournament seems likely to lead it to become an annual event each Labour weekend.
Saturday 16th October
Taiwan Cup
On a fine and sunny day the Taiwan Cup was held. A full field was assembled and there were some very good scores. The winner of the Taiwan Cup was Julie Wu on 43 points. Runner-up on 40 points was He Noppandon Theppitak.

On a fine and sunny day we had 27 Junior golfers on the course with the youngest participent Jayden Ford, 6 yrs old with a handicap of 36. The winner was Sheridan Rangihuna with a gross of 75, runner-up Luke Leesburg (79).

Shandon 36 Hole Open 2010
Once again we were thrilled to have a full field for the Shandon Open. Considering the amount of rain we had prior to the day the standard of golf was excellent. Many thanks to Greenkeeper Greg and his men who did a grand job preparing the course.
Tom Brocklesby was the winner of the Men’s Section with a gross score of 136 over the 36 holes. Julianne Alvarez won the Women’s Section with a gross score of 155.

The Midweek Women’s Club recently enjoyed their Mid-Year Christmas Dinner. The food was delicious (thanks to Carolyn and her Staff) and every one had a great time. The entertainment deserved a Five Star rating thanks to the talented Kim Weber-Swain and her team. It was really lovely to see so many of our older members here and to be able to catch up on their news.

Monday 7th June 2010 – Sand Bucket presentation
A warm welcome and thanks to the Wellington Korean Golf Association for their generous support in providing sand buckets for use on the course. All members please utilise the buckets by No.1 tee and return beside putting green upon completion of round.
The ceremony was held indoors due to the inclement weather which cancelled the annual Paddy Burke Trophy day.
Thursday 3rd June 2010 – Vance Cup Winners
Congratulations to Peter Holt and Andrew Hubbard the winners of the 2010 Vance Cup competition. Advancing through as winners after five rounds of golf is no easy feat, and the weather was not always the way we would like it either. Runners–up were Cesar Capistrano and Archie Milo.
Steve Smith and Russell Law were the winners of the Jock Hardie Trophy - Congratulations! Runners-up were Bruce Smith and Brian McLaughlin.

Thanks for the warm welcome. It’s such a pity about the weather this week; I was looking forward to meeting more of you.
Whilst coming from a professional banking background I am looking forward to giving my all to Shandon, striving to keep it THE club to play at in Wellington whether as a member or visitor.
I am a Life Member of Stop Out Sports, presently the Chairman. My family and I live in Lower Hutt.

Shandon Weekend Women’s Open
Once again this tournament was a great success and all that entered had a great day. Thank you to the sponsors who gave their support, without this generosity events such as this could not be held.
The winner of the Shandon Weekend Women’s Open 2010 was Mary Speir (Royal Wellington) with a blistering 72 gross. The winner of the 2nd Division was Jo Trendle (Ohariu Valley)
Hawkins Shandon through to Second Round of Duncan Cup
In a strong performance, Hawkins Shandon beat Paraparaumu 10.5 – 4.5 in the first round of the Duncan Cup at Otaki GC. The win featured winning debuts by Steve Thompson and Luke Leesburg, a winning return by Marty Veale, and great golf by the top three Richard Pegg, Jonny Dittmer and James Donnelly who were all well under par in the afternoon.
In the other semi-final, Miramar surprisingly thrashed Otaki Cup winners Royal Wellington 10.5 – 4.5.
Shandon plays Royal Wellington at Hutt GC this Saturday, 22 May for a place in the Duncan Cup final against Miramar. All supporters welcome.
Monday 10th May 2010 – Hawkins Shandon 3rd in Otaki Cup
Hawkins Shandon finished 3rd in a three-way battle with Royal Wellington and Miramar for the 2010 Otaki Cup title.
Needing a 8.5–6.5 win against Royal Wellington to retain the title, Hawkins Shandon started strongly in the foursomes but a rally by the opposition saw the morning points shared 2.5 each. Royal Wellington took an early, and decisive, lead in the afternoon singles and despite close matches, Shandon went down 9.5 - 5.5 overall to finish five points shy of the silverware.
This was Royal Wellington’s first Otaki Cup victory since 2004, with Miramar finishing in 2nd place. While Shandon performed consistently throughout the competition, they were unable to secure large enough margins in their wins.
Shandon now plays 4th-placed Paraparaumu Beach in the minor semi-final of the Duncan Cup, while Royal Wellington and Miramar compete for direct entry to the Duncan Cup final.
The semi-final ties take place at Otaki GC on Saturday, 15th May and the team would welcome all supporters. Bring your red caps to mark the third anniversary of Tommy’s passing.

Jim Ferguson - R.I.P.
On May 1st when Jim quietly passed away, Shandon lost a marvellous member. Jim is survived by Dorothy, whom he married seventy five years ago, and together they were enjoying retirement in a lovely townhouse in the Shona McFarlane Village, Lower Hutt.
Since joining Shandon in 1962, Jim had made many friends and always kept a keen interest in the club’s activities and members.
For his contribution to the club, and particularly his twenty-five years as a Wednesday volunteer, Jim was made an Honorary Member. He and friend, John Grant, used to intrigue visitors to the club by their repeated two club attack on the third and eighth holes.
Rest in peace Jim.
New - Pin Placement Sheets
Member reaction to the recent introduction of pin placement sheets has been very positive. If you have not already done so, pick up a laminated copy of the pin placements sheet, from the pro shop, to keep. Please ask Glenn or the pro shop staff if you have any questions about how it works. The pin placement zone changes most days - look for the position of the day on the new sign between tees 1 & 10 – on the side of the concrete block pump shed. The greens staff update this daily at 7am. The small yellow indicator flags have been removed permanently from pins.
Sunday 25th April 2010 – Grant Smith Memorial Tournament
Braving a ‘slight’ Shandon northerly and some showers, sixty two members enjoyed the Grant Smith Memorial Tournament on Anzac Day, Sunday April 25th.
Winners with 37 points in the Mixed Pairs Canadian Foursomes format were Rachel Edmond and Zabe Orchard. Their prize of two nights’ accommodation and golf at a choice of several locations throughout New Zealand was donated by Ross Blick and Yuriko Manabe.
Hugh MacKenzie generously sponsored two $50 Glenn Naylor Pro Shop vouchers for nearest the pin prizes, which was won by Jo Broad and Joshua Allan.
This was the first new format club day where prizes were sponsored, and a light snack provided at the prize giving. Thanks to Golf Committee for their organisation, and all who participated.
Monday 19th April – Otaki Cup holders, Hawkins Shandon well placed.
With just one round remaning Hawkins Shandon is in a good position to retain the Otaki Cup.
For the 2010 season the Hawkins Construction-sponsored premier team faced the unfamilar situation of having to farewell several long-term contributors.
Phil Aickin secured a role with NZ Golf and has moved to Auckland, Chan Young Chung and his family have moved back to Korea and Justin Turnbull has moved to Australia.
With these changes in the group the team has progressed in a steady, if unspectacular manner, through the first part of the season, the Otaki Cup, winning all their matches so far. Indeed Shandon is the only unbeaten side going into the final and deciding round; the other sides have managed to score more points in their wins giving Royal Wellington a 2 point advantage for the final round at Miramar on April 24th.
Hawkins Shandon play Royal Wellington in this final round, needing to win 8.5 - 6.5 to share the title and 9 - 6 to win it outright. In addition the team needs to at least draw with Royal to secure the valuable 2nd qualifying spot for the Duncan Cup, ahead of Miramar who as hosts have a bye.
Many subtle twists in this one, in what promises to be an exciting day as the team strive to defend the title won last year.

Wednesday 14th April – ‘TUI’ Twilight Tournament
The recent Twilight Golf Tournament at Shandon was a huge success. Thank you to Daryll Turley and his helpers who came up with the new format and a big thank you to the sponsor, DB Breweries.
Congratulations to overall winners Carol Henderson and Helen Lowe. What a nail-biting finish that was!!!

Sunday 28th March – 2010 Parkhill Cup Winners
Grant Ingham and Richard Whittington were top qualifiers for the 2010 Vance Cup, winning the Parkhill Cup with an outstanding combined stableford total of 76 points.

One of the Thursday Clubs most sought-after trophies is the Lauchlan Cup – won this year by Brian McLaughlin. Thanks to PC Patch for their generous sponsorship again – PC Patch provide all PC related services, and are located in Jackson St, Petone about 100 metres past the BNZ.
Pegg & Donnelly Perform Well for Wellington
Richard Pegg and James Donnelly excelled as members of the five man Wellington team, in Invercargill at the SBS Interprovincial tournament last week. What a credit to Shandon having two representatives in the team – both played solidly over the seventy-two holes. Team Wellington came fourth overall and Richard Pegg was in joint second place, just two shots off the lead.
Old Caterers - New Caterers!
After two years of brilliant service as caterers at Shandon, Trish and Francine are moving on – we are sorry to see them go! They will finish in May, when our new team will take over. Interviews are underway at present and an announcement will be made as soon as possible.
New Cleaners
One of the most important elements of our club – seven day cleaning in the wee small hours! We recently farewelled Whanau Cleaners after five years, and have contracted the professional commercial cleaning company of Robin King & Associates – we hope you will see a steady improvement in presentation of all areas of the clubhouse as a result.
Eagles Halberg Cheque Handed Over
After holding ‘Halberg’ Days in most golf clubs throughout NZ, the Eagles Golfing Society (the red jacket brigade!) recently handed over their annual fundraising cheque – a whopping $176491. These funds help youngsters with disabilities participate in sport, it's a great cause. Thanks to all Shandon members for your support over the past year.
Monday 1st March: Members Ace Te Marua and Royal Wellington
Congratulations to Philip Blagdon who scored his first-ever hole in one while playing in a business tournament at Te Marua. And also Joshua Allan, still in his mid-teens who scored his third hole in one while playing at Royal Wellington.
Sunday 21st February: Hole In One Magic
Lorraine Smith aced the Par 3 4th hole on a beautiful sunny Sunday at Shandon on February 21st. Congratulations Lorraine!
14th February 2010: Green Wins Masterton/Eketahuna by 3 Shots
A blistering round of 64 shot Shandon’s Andrew Green into the winner’s slot at the DHL Global Forwarding/Recreational Services Pro-Am over the weekend.
Together with his one under par round of 70, scored in very difficult weather conditions, his total of 134 was three shots clear of runner up Clarke Osborne of Auckland. Osborne was the first day leader with an exceptional 67 at Eketahuna in the wind and rain, and he added a one under par round of 70 at Masterton for his 137 score. There was a seven-way tie for third place on 140.
6th February 2010: Harry Devos Memorial Tournament
The Devos family welcomed about seventy members at Shandon on Waitangi Day, Saturday February 6th. As usual the family started on No 10 tee near ‘Harry’s Seat’ toasting Harry’s memory twenty one years after he passed away. At the prizegiving, Dave Devos spoke on behalf of all the family and presented the winners with shirts and hats.
27th January 2010: MWW Opening Day
Opening Day for Shandon Midweek Women was held on Wednesday 27th January, a perfectly sunny and wind-free day. The Greensome Foursomes format produced some great scores, with the eventual winners, Jennie Whitwell and Kathy Sun Lloyd, combining well to reach 46 stablefords.
The Summer Cup, best 4 of 6 rounds on Wednesdays over the summer period, was also awarded. The joint winners for 2009/2010 were Margot Davenport and Jo MacKenzie. The Little Summer Cup, presented to the runner-up, was awarded to Kathy Sun Lloyd. Judy Simpson was the recipient of the bronze summer eclectic competition prize, with 5 birdies in one round contributing to a fantastic total. The silver eclectic competition prize went to Kim Weber-Swain.
24th January 2010: Club Opening Day
Ninety four members competed for the Bill Kyle Trophy on Sunday 24th January. Congratulations to the winner, John Southon who led the Individual Stableford field. Nearest the pins went to Rachel Edmond and Tom Nicolle, while Jenny Whitwell won the major spot prize of a ‘Night for Two with Breakfast’, at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor, Wellington.
15th January 2010: Monster hole-in-one the toast of Shandon

Tim Dougherty is the toast of the Shandon Golf Club after slamming a majestic 360-metre hole-in-one on one of its hardest holes.
Tim, a hulking 188cm-tall Iowa native, has been playing golf for 20 years but the lucky strike, on Shandon’s challenging par four second hole, was his first ace.
Mr Dougherty, 32, said the ball sailed slightly right-to-left and landed with a long bounce before it rolled out of sight. It rolled in the hole nearly four lengths of a rugby field away.
His group searched for his ball for five minutes before he decided to check the hole. “I just looked in the hole for the hell of it and there it was. It was amazing.
“It’s still not real. Everybody was more in shock than anything.”
Mr Dougherty said it was a welcome strike because his putting and chipping was not his strength. But any wishes he had to souvenir the ball vanished on the 10th hole when it became stuck up a tree.
It was the first hole-in-one at the second hole in the club’s history and left members gobsmacked.
The Lower Hutt club’s professional, Glenn Naylor, said Mr Dougherty was known for his “huge” hitting but a hole in one of that length was a rare feat. “To hit it 360 metres and get it within the confines of a hole is pretty amazing.”
Playing partner Dean Robb said the shot was “just fantastic” to watch. “You couldn’t wish for a better drive. You knew from the moment he hit it, it was going to be somewhere near the green.”
The ace helped Mr Dougherty to a round of one-over-par 71. When he went up to the clubhouse he was greeted with handshakes and was cheered and clapped to the bar.
