16th August 2009 – Shandon Open Champion Richard Pegg
On Sunday 16th August Richard Pegg, with four previous Open Club Championships to his name, was up against Jonny Dittmer who just twenty four hours earlier had won the 36 hole Shandon Open. Pegg was one up after 9 holes, two up after 18, and that is how the match finished on the 35th hole. Congratulations to both men.
15th August 2009 – Shandon 36 Hole Open
This year two innovations enhanced this excellent tournament, held on Saturday 15th August in brilliant conditions. For the first time, women were included in the field, and professionals were also invited to participate. Jonny Dittmer, one of Shandon’s Hawkins Premier Team, carded a morning round of 66, and afternoon of 70, to win the Open by one shot. Andrew Green topped the pool of NZPGA professionals, and Kawhena Te Rangihaea scored a total of 152 to win the Women’s Division by four shots. As a key selection event, Wellington Golf Inc. were able to announce the provincial representative teams for men and women after the prize-giving.
10th August 2009 – Team Victorious!
The Shandon team of Julie Wright, Pushpa Nair, Carole Butland, Jennie Ellison , Michelle Rathbun and Ruth Wehi were winners of the Wellington Bronze Pennants final, played at Judgeford Golf Club on August 3rd.
Saturday 8th July – Eton Cup
Congratulations to John Neill who was delighted to win his first individual trophy – the Eton Cup is a Par competition. John has been part of winning pairs combinations before, but never managed a solo victory since he joined Shandon almost twenty years ago.
Thursday 30th July – Bernie Morse Memorial (Thursday Club)
Although weather delayed by one week, the Bernie Morse Memorial attracted plenty of interest again this year, with joint winners Bobby Ng, Awan Gde, Charlie Dickson and Grant Ingham taking the trophy. The Bernie Morse Memorial was established in 1995 and celebrates the great work Bernie did for the Thursday Club and Shandon as a whole. Bernie’s memorial seat is the one under shelter on the 16th tee.
Thanks to Datamaster for their support of this event: Datamaster – Residential and Commercial Voice and Data Cabling.
Tuesday 14th July 2009 – Kellie Harrall gets Representative Honours
One of Shandon’s top women players has been selected to play in the Wellington Provincial Team. This year’s Caledonian Quadrangular tournament will be held in Taupo on July 26 and 27, and is contested between Wellington, Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Taranaki.
Monday 8th June 2009 – Hawkins Shandon miss double
The Hawkins Shandon Premier team missed out on collecting the Otaki Cup/Duncan Cup double for 2009, going down to Miramar 9.5 – 5.5 in the final of the Duncan Cup at Royal Wellington on Sunday.
On a cold but calm winter’s day the team conceded an early advantage in the foursomes being down in all 5 matches after the 5th, a lead to Miramar that was not relinquished to go to lunch 4 – 1 down. Only James Donnelly and Chan Young Chung were able to register a win in what was the team’s worst morning result in more than 15 years.
Into the afternoon the goal was quite clear; only a near-clean sweep would acheive a win.
After 6 holes the team lead 7 – 3 and after 12 holes 8 – 2. Alas Miramar staged the comeback that was always likely and unfortunately for Shandon it was late in the round with little opportunity to reverse the momentum change, Miramar winning the singles 5.5 – 4.5 for their 9.5 – 5.5 win.
Two highlights late in the round were James D winning the last 2 holes to gain a half with NZ’s no.1 ranked player Peter Spearman-Burn and Chan holing a wedge on the last for an eagle and a 1up win.
Good efforts also from the tail saw Justin Turnbull, Dave Thwaites and Zabe Orchard leading out and getting the result straight back to 4 all but to no avail.
A top year by the team sharing the trophy spoils 1 a piece with Miramar and balancing the earlier 11 – 4 win in the Otaki Cup with the final loss.
The support package from Hawkins Construction for the Premier Team and the Watt Cup Team this year in the first of a 3 year deal was tremendous; onwards and upwards for both teams in 2010 and 2011.
Saturday 6th June 2009

Saturday 9th May – Hawkins Shandon into Final
![]()
Hawkins Shandon won a tense semi-final against Paraparaumu Beach 8.5 - 6.5 at Hutt on Saturday to progress straight to the Duncan Cup final and set their sights on a seventh title in 10 years.
Shandon won the morning foursomes 3-2 with close results in all matches
apart from Richard Pegg and Justin Turnbull’s 6 & 4
win.
The afternoon singles were equally close with the final result not apparent
until the last few minutes. In the end some great comeback golf over
the closing holes from Dave Thwaites, Zabe Orchard and Mark
Whalen netted a win and a half and made the difference. Earlier,
great play by Justin, Fasi Tuulima, Marc Jennings and James
Donnelly, who were all even or under par around a challenging
Hutt course, had ensured four decisive singles wins.
Paraparaumu will play Miramar this
saturday in the repechage semi with the winner to meet Shandon in the
Duncan Cup final at ROYAL WELLINGTON on SUNDAY
JUNE 7th.
Come along to support the team and see some great golf!
Saturday 9th May – Great performance by Men’s Team
Congratulations to our second 36 Hole Men’s Team on a solid season. They had a fine win over Waikanae at Te Marua to win the Association Cup. Well done to team manager Bruce Smith and his squad – this is where talent for the premier team is developed and identified, and is a crucial part of Shandon’s excellent top level performance.
Monday 20th April – Wellington District Foursomes Tournament

19th April 2009 – Hawkins Shandon win the Otaki Cup
![]()
Shandon, with a 9/6 win over Hutt, won the Otaki Cup on Saturday 18th April at Manor Park Golf Club.
The team total of 59.5 points left Shandon 6.5 points clear of second-placed Paraparaumu.
These two teams play the major semi final – the winner has a place in the Duncan Cup final. Miramar and Manor Park play the minor semi final – the winner of this plays the loser of the major semi final for the other Duncan Cup finals spot.
13th April 2009 – Shandon Women Win!
Margot Davenport and Jo Emson won the New Zealand Women’s Golf Autumn Foursomes completed yesterday at Te Marua. What a great achievement against so many good golfers from around New Zealand! Competitors played 36 holes per day over three days, and at times the playing conditions were unpleasant to say the least with gale force winds, rain and cold temperatures. Agnes Han and Theresa Jeong also did well to get through to the quarter finals.
4th April 2009 – Hawkins Shandon in front
![]()
On a picture perfect day at the Landsdowne course in Masterton, Hawkins Shandon beat Royal Wellington 10.5-4.5 to ensure a 4.5 point lead over Paraparaumu going into the final round of the Otaki Cup.
A superb 4.5 to .5 foursomes effort was notable again for committed efforts down the stretch with Dave Thwaites (unbeaten in foursomes this year) and Zabe Orchard grinding out a half on the last for a one up win and James Donnelly and Chan Y Chung coming back from 3 down to square their match on 18.
The standard of golf in the afternoon was high with six Shandon players finishing their rounds under par including Richard Pegg who lost 1 down to an opponent who finshed 5 under par. The afternoon result was 6-4 in favour of Shandon. Manor Park beat the previously unbeaten Paraparaumu 9-6 with Miramar suprisingly thumping a capable Hutt team 12.5-2.5.
The final round is on April 18th at Manor Park. All supporters are welcome – take the opportunity to support your team and see some outstanding golf.
Points to date are: Shandon 50.5, Paraparaumu 46, Miramar 44.5, Manor Park 44.5 (bye to come), Royal Wellington 33.5, Hutt 32.5 and Masterton 18.5.
The final round at Manor Park on April 18th sees the following:
• Hawkins Shandon 50.5 vs. Hutt 32.5
• Paraparaumu 46 vs. Miramar 44.5
• Royal Wgtn 33.5 vs. Masterton 18.5
The top four teams after this round will contest the Duncan Cup.

21st March 2009 – Otaki Cup going to the Wire
Hawkins Shandon had a bye on Saturday as Shandon hosted round 5 of the Otaki Cup.
In perfect conditions the days results confirmed that the race for the title is looking very much a two-horse race between Shandon and Paraparaumu Beach G.C. Paraparaumu and Hutt were even through most of the day, with the coasters finishing strongly to acheive a good 9 – 6 win. Manor Park took a 3.5 – 1.5 morning advantage over Royal Wellington but in the end had to settle for a 7.5 all draw. Miramar had a comprehesive 13.5 – 1.5 win over Masterton.
So the points are; Shandon 40, Paraparaumu 40, Manor Park 35.5 (bye to come), Miramar 32, Hutt 30, Royal Wellington 29, Masterton 18.5 (bye to come).
The next round is at Masterton on the 4th April, Shandon vs. Royal, Para vs. Manor and the final round is at Manor Park on the 18th April, Shandon vs. Hutt, Para vs. Mira.

4 March 2009
The Shandon Mid Week Women celebrate ‘Grandmotherhood’ each year with some type of themed day. This year it was the trundlers that were dolled up in grandmotherly fashion – and there was a tremendous amount of effort and originality evident in among the fantastic dressed trunders! Congratulations to this year’s winner Rosemary Trendle.
March 1st 2009– Hawkins Watt Cup beat defending Champs
![]()
The Hawkins Watt Cup team handed out an 11-1 hiding to the defending Watt Cup Champions Masterton on Sunday afternoon.
With the advantage of playing on their home course, the boys were in
control from the start, lead by the impressive Chan Young Chung who
eagled the 10th, their first hole played, and continued on in this vain
to be 3 under the card for his two large wins. The other juniors all
had good wins, with Josh Allan continuing
his nice run of form this season having only lost one match in Watt Cup
and being
unbeaten in Div 3 36 hole.
Two wins were also recorded by Luke Leesburg, Jordan Robb and James Perkinson.
With the withdrawal off Hutt G.C.s Watt Cup and Pennants teams, for the second year in a row, the team will now not play till April 19th against Royal Wellington at Shandon.
24th February 2009
Members who experienced exceptional slow play on Sunday 22nd are informed that this matter was discussed in depth by the Golf Committee on Monday 23rd.
Several written complaints highlighted the implications of the slow play. In this particular case, a group of members and guests got well behind those in front, and caused some rounds, the Weekend Women in particular, to take more than five hours.
It was agreed that no groups of visitors be booked prior to noon on weekend days in the future. Volunteer course marshals will be rostered on weekend days from this weekend onwards.
21st February 2009 – Great win puts Shandon in the lead
A superb performance by Hawkins Shandon against Miramar, at Paraparaumu G.C., has seen Shandon regain the lead in the Otaki Cup and set up a two horse race for the title with Paraparaumu Beach.
The Hawkins boys turned up and played with a real determination from the outset, in what were trying weather conditions on an exposed course. The morning foursomes were even throughout with all the games going down the strectch, excepting a 9 & 8 win by Jonny Dittmer and Marc Jennings. In what was to set the tone for later in the day Phil Aickin and Richard Pegg won the last two holes to win one up and James Donnelly and Chan Young Chung halved the final hole to win one up giving a 4 - 1 result.
The afternoon singles were similarly close; good wins to Phil 5 & 4 and Mark Whalen 4 & 3 were followed by Zabe Orchard wining 1 up and Marc J 2 & 1. With the singles evenly poised at 4 - 3 Chan, Jonny and James who had all been slightly behind played convicingly down the stretch to win 1 up, 2 & 1 and 1up respectively to give a 11 - 4 overall result!
This continued a great recent streak against Miramar of 13, 11.5 and 11 point wins.
In the other matches Manor Park beat Masterton 8.5 - 6.5 and Hutt and Royal drew. This leaves the points as – Shandon 40, Para 31 (bye), Manor 28, Hutt 24(bye), Royal 21.5 (bye), Miramar 18.5 (bye) and Masterton 17.
The next round is at Shandon on 21st March, our bye.
22 February 2009 – Hawkins Watt Cup Team Opener
The Watt Cup competition for 2009 got under way on Sunday with the Hawkins Shandon Team having a tough first up assignment against Manor Park playing with home course advantage.
With four Otaki Cup players in their team of six, all no doubt smarting from the their team’s loss to Shandon in the Otaki Cup the day before, Manor Park proved too strong for Shandon, running out winners 8 - 4.
Marc Jennings and Josh Allan both played well, with Josh continuing his good scoring and results from the Div 3 36 hole side, shooting a solid 76 to acheive a win and a loss.
The next round is on March 1st vs. Masterton at Shandon, another tough challenge with the majority of the Masterton team playing in their Otaki Cup side.

21 February 2009 – Hard-fought Win
Hawkins Shandon battled hard for a 10-5 win over Manor Park at the Hutt G.C. in the third round of the Otaki Cup.
After starting the day with a strong 4-1 morning foursomes effort, the team was made to work hard for the 6-4 singles outcome in the afternoon. A feature of the afternoon’s result was Manor Park’s top three players all achieving wins against their higher ranked opponents.
Dave Thwaites lead the team out solidly all day; a 7/6 foursomes result with Zabe Orchard in the no.5 slot was followed by a 5/4 singles win in the lead out group in the afternoon. Mark Whalen continued his strong start to the year, now being 6 from 6 matches after this round.
Good 2 under the card rounds from Marc Jennings, James Donnelly and Phil Aickin have the team building some form for the rounds ahead.
Paraparaumu Beach took the lead in the competition with a 12.5 - 2.5 win over Masterton with Royal Wellington causing a minor upset by toppling Miramar 8.5 - 6.5.
Paraparaumu lead on 31, Shandon 29, Manor Park 19.5 from Hutt 16.5, Miramar 14.5 Royal Wellington 14 all who have had their bye, and Masterton 10.5. Round 4 is on Sat at Paraparaumu against Miramar.

8 February 2009 – Hawkins Shandon beaten by Paraparaumu
On a blistering hot day at the Royal Wellington Golf Course, the Hawkins Shandon Premier Team suffered a 9 - 6 loss to Paraparaumu Beach.
Despite holding a 3 – 2 advantage throughout most of the morning foursomes two of these matches finished all square giving a 2 – 3 loss.
In the ever increasing afternoon heat the boys from the beach outlasted Shandon, who despite again holding the lead, faltered for an equally close 4 – 6 loss giving a dissapointing overall result.
Richard Pegg and Phil Aickin had an all square result in the no.1 slot foursomes and both had good wins against Sean Kells and Frank Borren respectively, in the singles. Mark Whalen and Fasi Tuulima had a resounding foursomes win and Mark and Zabe Orchard had very good afternoon wins.
Miramar opened their account with a narrow 8-7 win over Manor Park after being 4-1 down in the morning and Hutt were solid winners over Masterton, 9-6.
Hawkins Shandon still hold the lead in the competition on 19 points followed by Paraparaumu on 18.5, Hutt 16.5 Manor Park 14.5, Masterton 8, Miramar 8 and Royal Wellington 5.5 both of whom have had their bye.
This week’s match is against Manor Park at the Hutt course.

Nearly ninety members and visitors enjoyed a marvellous day – 12.30 shotgun, mixed pairs combined Stableford. Several generations of the Devos family either played or attended the prizegiving. President Brian Hall welcomed all present and recounted some of Harry’s time at Shandon prior to his passing away twenty years ago. Winners of the Harry Devos Memorial Trophy for 2009 were Noeline and John Southon.
Hawkins Construction Sponsors Premier and Watt Cup Teams
![]()
Hawkins Construction, one of New Zealand’s largest players in the construction industry, has committed to a three year sponsorship deal, supporting the Mens’ Premier and Watt Cup Junior Teams.
A round of golf in mid 2008 involving Chris Hunter, CEO of Hawkins Construction and Hugh McKenise, at Shandon led to discussion about Shandon’s interclub success, and Chris’ desire to be involved with supporting these two teams. Chris hadn’t played at Shandon for twenty odd years, but had followed the club’s achievements, having been a member in the late 70s and early 80s. Chris was a part of the Watt Cup winning sides of 1982, 1983 and 1984 before leaving the region for studies and a career in the construction industry.
The two teams will be referred to as Hawkins Shandon, and supporting sponsorship signage will show Hawkins Construction as a Shandon Interclub sponsor.
Find out about Hawkins Construction at www.hawkins.co.nz and follow the progress of the Hawkins Premier Team and Hawkins Watt Cup sides on the Shandon Web Page.

Seniors Golf – Give It A Try!
Seniors Golf was established in 1990 and was the inspiration of a small group of Shandon members. Chief of these was Vi. Bishop, a long-standing member of the club, whose trophy is competed for each year.
The group’s objective was the provision of an opportunity for older members of the club to play nine holes at a level at which they can more easily cope. Also was the desire to retain the companionship that association with the club had given them.
The first tee is programmed for us from 9.00a.m. on Friday mornings and our disc draw is played in threes. We have an early lunch, prizegiving and a raffle all of which provides an enjoyable end to the morning. We have a mid-year and a Christmas luncheon that are both popular occasions.
The number of players has increased this year and it would be great to see even more joining us. Come along and give it a try.
Men’s Royal Cup
Sunday 1st February – 7.30am shotgun start. The Royal Cup is an annual men’s event for combined stableford pairs. Winners this year were Arne Roeben and Peter Gapes with 76 points!!
Weekend Women’s Opening Day 2009
Because the men’s Royal Cup kicked off with a 7.30am shotgun on Sunday 1st February, the Weekend Women had a 12 noon start for their official 2009 opening day. Welcome back to all, and wishing you a fantastic years golf.
Hawkins Shandon open their 2009 account
The Hawkins Shandon premier team began their quest for the 2009 Otaki Cup with a sound 13 – 2 win over Masterton G.C.
On a windy day at Miramar the Hawkins sponsored team followed a 5 – 0 morning foursomes result with an 8 – 2 afternoon singles result, to open up an early lead on the opposition clubs.
Although Masterton were mising a couple of key players, Shandon were also missing 3 of last seasons top 4, with Andrew Green having turned pro, Jonny Dittmer still in rehab and Chan Young Chung in Australia. With the team having missed out last year by a single point accumulation of points early is key, and this was a great start. Paraparaumu, with a good 91⁄2 -51⁄2 win over Royal Wellington are in second place with Miramar being the host and having a bye yet to open their account. The other two teams, Manor Park and Hutt shared the points 71⁄2 all
Captain Phil Aickin lead superbly from the front combining with Richard Pegg in the no.1 slot for a 6&5 foursomes win and being 3 under in the afternoon for a 7&6 win at no.3. Round 2 is at Royal Wellington on Feb 7th, against Paraparaumu.
