Sunday 16th November 2008

Sunday 16th November saw a host of competitions at Shandon. Congratulations to these weekend winners:

Monday 3rd November 2008

The Sharp Shandon Open Mixed Foursomes were played on Saturday 1st November. The majority of the hundred strong field managed to finish despite storm conditions! Well done to Kellie Harrall and Richard Pegg, gross winners on the day. They share the trophy with Amy Austin and Jordan Robb. Congratulations also Chris May and Dave Eddington on winning the nett competition.

Sharp generously sponsored the day, and donated a new-generation flat screen television which was raffled - lucky ticket holders were Noelene and John Southon.

The men’s Wilford Cup was played on Sunday 2nd November. Nett Medal over 18 holes. Great effort by the winner Barry Dawe.

Monday 20th October 2008

The Shandon Midweek Women’s Open Tournament was held on Monday 20th October after being postponed from August due to the bad weather. We were more fortunate this time around with a mostly sunny day but the strong NW winds presented quite a challenge to the 69 players who came from various Wellington and Wairarapa clubs. Once again we received wonderful support and generosity from our main sponsor, Life Pharmacy, who provided all the major prizes.

Sunday 5th October

Well done to Charlie Dickson and Robbie McLean who teamed up to win this year’s Tisdall Cup Men’s Pairs Trophy.

Saturday 4th October 2008

Champion Weekend Women - congratulations to Beth Wagner claiming her sixth Open Championship, victorious over Agnes Han in the 36 hole final. And Mavis Bruce defeated Odilia Cherry on the 35th hole, to notch up her third Junior Championship title.

Friday 3rd October 2008

Srixon Pairs – held on and new to Shandon this year, the Srixon Pairs format leads eventually to a national final. Winners of the Shandon day were Christine Selwyn and Carilyn Banks. They are unavailable for the Regional Final at Foxton on November 8th, so the two pairs who tied for second will go through – Kay Okeroa and Tony Holt, together with Darryl Turley and Lance Pupuke. The event is sponsored by Srixon with proceeds going Cale Golf, who provide equipment for Junior Golf Development in NZ – including Shandon. Organiser Lance Murray is also the editor of the very popular (and free) Golfer Gazette.

The 2008 Shandon Junior Open again attracted a good field of under 19 boys and girls. Brilliant sponsorship too from long-time supporters Unilever who generously gave lots of useful smellies (Rexona, Dove etc) and some warm jackets. Thanks also to B J Hill Builders our other annual sponsors.

Sunday 31st August 2008

New Junior Club Champion – congratulations to Alan Hermans, the winner over Alan Baldwin on the 37th hole. Well done both men.

Club Day Results – another terrific turnout a great club day on Sunday 31st. Winning team members were Yuriko Manabe, Lorraine Smith, Bruce Emson and Kevin Hillock – 87 points, and in second place the team of John Topp, Maureen Burton, Tom Nicolle and Shinji Manabe.

Dave Neil was the happy winner of a lucky draw prize – a $100 voucher for the new Lone Star in Petone.

The weather-shortened Shandon Men’s Open was played over 27 holes this year. The overall winner was Mirimar’s Peter Spearman Burn. Congratulations Peter! Other Gross and Nett results from a great day’s golf can be viewed here...

Sunday 15th June 2008

Another Shandon Champion! Chan Young Chung won the 36 Hole Hutt Winter Cup at Hutt Golf Club, with Fasi Tuulima coming second.

Daryll Turley won the Paddy Burke Memorial at Shandon with 35 Stableford points.

Sunday 25th May 2008

Two Shandon Junior Pennants teams made it into the Rosebowl Final, which was played at Manor Park. Congratulations to Dean Robbs Central Zone boys who won! James Perkinson, Jordan Robb, Mac Leesburg, Luke Leesburg. Coming in a marvellous third overall were Justin Wilson’s Northern Zone team.

Wellington’s Provincial Men – both Seniors and Juniors – convincingly beat Hawkes Bay over a two day competition. Well done to the Shandon contingent – Andrew Green, Jonny Dittmer, Chan Young Chung and Marc Jennings.

Saturday 24th May 2008

Men’s 18 Hole Interclub – well done to the Division 3 team who have an unassailable lead in the Pennants Trophy with one round to play. Grenville Burton and his team have had an outstanding season and thoroughly deserve their promotion to Division 2 next year.

Saturday 17th May 2008

Shandon emphatically beat Miramar 11 and a half to 3 and a half, to regain the region’s premier team trophy - the Duncan Cup. On a sunny still autumn day the course at Royal Wellington was presented superbly. Shandon edged Miramar out 3 to 2 in the morning foursomes then streaked away losing only one singles match in the afternoon.

Shandon supporters were numerous, and highly visible in their red “Tommy” hats – a tribute to Tom Caithness who passed away almost to the day, one year ago.

Shandon Women’s Weekend Sponsored Open

The Shandon Women’s Weekend Open tournament was held on Saturday 17 May. We were fortunate with the very pleasant weather on the day, and the course proved a challenge for the 98 players which included several Wellington regional trialists and players from various Wellington and Wairarapa clubs. The tournament was an outstanding success, due in no uncertain terms to the support and generosity of our sponsors.

The annual Feltex and Fergie Cup tournaments (Best Nett Medal) were keenly contested – Ray Farrell won the Feltex Cup (handicap of 15 and under), and Peter Reweti the Fergie Cup (handicap of 16 and over).

New Caterers Trish & Francine trading as Tee Room Caterers are up and running – try their superb home made food, or enjoy your favourite espresso coffee.

Wednesday 6th February 2008 – Waitangi Day

More than a hundred members and guests celebrated the memory of Harry “have you paid your green fees?” Devos along with many of the Devos Family. All admired the beautiful new garden around Harry’s seat on the 10th tee – well done Dave Devos of Dirt Landscaping. Winners of the Harry Devos Memorial – Molly and Maurice Turner.

Sunday 27th January 2008

A great turnout for Club Opening Day 2008 competing for the Bill Kyle Trophy. This Individual Stableford tournament was emphatically won by Denis Tuffery with 43 points.


Sunday 25th November 2007

Another successful AGM meeting and golf tournament. Members enjoyed a superb breakfast, vibrant meeting and fantastic golf. The day’s highlight was officially opening the Tom Caithness Lounge in the presence of Diana and some family members.

Great golfers scooping top honours in the stableford competition were; First Women – Em Fidow, second Yuriko Manabe. First Man – Shinji Manabe, second Travis Gawler.

Ambrose Tournament – by far our strongest field to date. Every current premier player and couple of notable legends in Cliff Moore and Ronnie Olivecrona. Great scoring on a course in wonderful condition. A blistering finish by Team Veale of birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie to match the 59 gross shot by Team Pegg and to just pip them by 0.6 on the handicap.

Duncan Cup Awards for 2007 were presented also:

  • Duncan Cup Legends Board — 2007 Inclusion Ron Olivecrona

John Corbett Memorial Trophy: Pam Corbett presented this new trophy to the first recipient - Luke Leesburg. The Corbett family donated the trophy in honour of John, to be awarded to the "Most Outstanding Junior Member" each year.

Off to China - Chan Young Chung has been selected to play in the Aaron Baddeley Junior International Championship. This year it’s being held in Guangzhou later this month.

Tuesday 6th November 2007

Beth Wagner & Zabe Orchard won the 2007 Shandon Open Mixed Foursomes on Saturday 3rd November. The Shandon Weekend Women’s Club organized a brilliant day, with close to 120 participating. Thanks to Black Coffee Software who generously sponsored the event and supplied some golf towels and shirts.


Tuesday 16th October 2007

Shandon Women’s Weekend Club Championship Finals were held on Saturday 6th October 2007. Results were:

  • Open Club Champion for 2007 – Beth Wagner, runner up Tupi Willis.
  • Bronze Club Champion for 2007 – Chris McLaughlin, runner up Elaine Neill.
  • Open Flight Club Champion for 2007 – Chris Balloch, runner up Lise Williams.

Tuesday 25th September

  • Tupi Willis has been selected for Wellington Masters team to play at National Provincial Champs at Kerikeri in November. Wellington are the defending champions and we wish Tupi the best of luck in retaining the title.
  • The Shandon Women’s 36 Hole Interclub finished 2nd to Royal Wellington in the Lansdowne Trophy this year just beating a strong Manor Park team. This was a good result and they are hoping to go one better next year.
  • Richard Pegg was runner up in 72 hole Wellington Strokeplay Championships at Miramar this weekend, beaten on the 2nd play-off hole by Peter Spearman-Burn. Chan Young Chung finished tied for 3rd.
  • Richard also won the Miramar Open on Sunday 23rd September and the Wainuiomata Open the previous weekend with Fasi Tu’ulima finishing 2nd at Wainuiomata.

Monday 6th August – Final results from Shandon Weekend Women’s Interclub

OTS (off the stick) Interclub:

  • OTS 1 finished first in their division for the year.
  • OTS 3 finished third in their division for the year.

Well done OTS 1 team for a great result.

Mary Alward Interclub: Our final round for the year was played against Karori last Saturday 4th August at Waikanae. The result was a win for Shandon 10.5 v Karori 7.5. Our final placing in the Mary Alward competition for the year was fourth. This was a pleasing result. Well done Team!

Saturday 4th August – Stimpmeter Readings

Course Superintendent John Haley now posts the STIMPMETER reading each Friday in the Match Room. This indicates how quick the putting greens are... the higher the number the faster the ball speed.


Sunday 29th July

Two excellent matches decided the Senior and Intermediate Men’s Club Championships, played over 36 holes. Richard Pegg edged out Phil Aickin 2 up, to take the Senior title for the fourth time. Wayne Coleman, in top form recently, beat Min Ho Chung 4 and 3. Well done everyone.

Saturday 28th July

In the inaugural match between Shandon and Coringa Golf Club (Christchurch) Shandon claimed first blood! Coringa are just building up to their interclub season, and hope that this will be an annual fixture home and away. They provided a fine trophy and the Shandon crew provided some ’fine’ hospitality! Thanks to organisers Phil Aickin and Steve Weir.

Monday 2nd July

Well done Marc Jennings! Marc came second in the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club Junior Open, behind Peter Spearman-Burn, and ahead of a smart field... Jimmy Moore placed well at fourth equal. This fantastic effort sees Marc selected to play a national event at the Western Bays course in the Bay of Plenty in September – the Eagles NZ Boys and Girls Championship.


Sunday 27th May

The Shandon Women’s Weekend Sponsored Open was held on Sunday 27 May. The field of 90 included several Wellington regional trialists and players from various Wellington and Wairarapa clubs. The top quality field was very pleasing for the organisers and sponsors.Winners of the day were:

Congratulations to our Division One 36 hole team, who meet Miramar, at Manor Park on Saturday June 9th, in the 2007 Duncan Cup Final.

Monday 21st May

More than five hundred people packed into the clubhouse to farewell Tom Caithness who passed away on the 16th of May. Shandon has lost a wonderful friend – ’Sir Thomas Alexander the Great’.


Wednesday April 25th 2007 (Anzac Day)

Hugh and Joanna MacKenzie won the annual Grant Smith Memorial Tournament, with Bill Hutton scoring the top Men’s Stableford.

Some big birthday celebrations of late – Tom Caithness reached three quarters of a century, Molly Turner a little less than that, and Christine Selwyn and Kay Okeroa, even less than that!!

John Southon scored a hole in one on the 18th!

The first game of the Mary Alward Interclub was played on Saturday 17 February at Te Marua between Shandon and Waikanae. Results: Waikanae 9 1/2 Shandon 8 1/2. We felt this was a good result for our first game out, with a lot of tough matches played.

Monday 5th February 2007

Interclub Teams for the 18 hole Wellington regional competition have been announced and are posted in the Shandon Match Room – first round Saturday 10th February. Good luck to all!

Winners of the 2007 Royal Cup (Men’s Pairs) on Sunday 4th February were father and son Lance and Frano Pupuke with a combined 77 Stableford points.

Jonny Dittmer won the Otago Strokeplay Championship by ten shots from Andrew Green.

Luke Leesburg won the Bill Kyle Trophy at Shandon’s Opening Day tournament – a great day enjoyed by more than 120 members.

Chan Young Chung won the Nth Island Under 15 title at Dannevirke GC last week to add to the New Zealand Under 15 title he won last year.

Saturday 27th January 2007

On Saturday 27 January 2007 the Weekend Women’s Opening Day was held. There was a good turnout of members to play for the first competition of the
year which is the Committee 2000 Trophy.

This was won by Vonnie Faiumu with 39 Stableford points.Well done Vonnie.

Tuesday 16th January 2007

The Men’s Summer Cup was played after a short rain delay on Sunday 14th
January with the winner being 17 year old Marc Jennings with 40 stableford
points, on count back from Rudolph Vos. Well done Marc!

Also, congratulations to Jonny Dittmer on his 7th placing in the New Zealand Under 23 Championship.

Des Reid won the Shandon Men’s Veterans Championship with a nett 63!! Meanwhile, in the Shandon Weekend Women’s Championship finals, played over 36 holes, Jill Peterson won the Open section, and Mavis Bruce the Bronze — congratulations!

Saturday 7th October 2006

The Shandon Men’s team came a valiant second in the Judgeford Shield held at Miramar — each club nominates a ten man team drawn from current year interclub representatives.

Sunday 1st October 2006

Chan Young Chung won the Under 15 section at the NZ Under 19 Championships at the weekend making him the NZ Under 15 Champion. Also – Mark Brown, Shandon based touring Professional, won the four day Taranaki Open at New Plymouth, by three shots.


Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th September 2006

Both the Wainuiomata 36 Hole Open, and the 72 Hole Wellington Strokeplay Championship were played at Wainuiomata on the 23rd and 24th September. Shandon’s Andrew Green won both, with the Strokeplay Championship going to a play-off against Perry Hayman from Manor Park.

Sunday 10th September 2006

Congratulations to Shandon member Richard Pegg who won the Hutt Golf Club’s 36 Hole Open by three shots.

Sunday 3rd September 2006

In the inaugural Golf Autoscore Tri Series between Wainuiomata, Manor Park, and Shandon, Wainuiomata won the final at Manor Park. The Shandon team of John Neill, Elaine Neill, Tony Holt and Des Reid came third in the teams event, great effort!


Saturday 26th August 2006

New Zealand won the teams event at Singapore’s Amateur Open today – the two man team of Andrew Green (Shandon) and James Gill (Auckland) had a three shot lead after the four day tournament. Congratulations to Andrew too for his tenth place overall.

Sunday 19th August 2006

Richard Pegg beat Rodney Barltrop by one stroke to win the Brendan Foot Holden Shandon Men’s Open. Other Shandon men featured strongly - Fasi Tuulima 4th equal, David Thwaites 8th, Jonny Dittmer 9th and Shane Kuiti 10th.
